STONY RUN QUAKER MEETING HOUSE

The project involved a comprehensive analysis of site, facility, and program to develop the locations for three additions as well as necessary interior renovations to bring the facility into compliance with current life safety and handicap accessibility codes. It was designed to provide an environment conducive to use by people with chemical and other environmental sensitivities. The comfortable scale of the stone-walled, slate-roofed complex is surrounded by mature trees and nestled into a sylvan site. A glass-walled addition to the Dining Room provides an airy overlook of the wooded surroundings. A two-story, classroom addition extends the massing of the building and includes a new, second front door. The slight rotation of this volume minimizes the apparent bulk of the building and creates a private meditation court.
